Leadership consulting

Technical leadership, for as many days a month as you need it

Good engineering teams are rarely short of talent. They are short of direction, clear priorities and someone who has been through the hard parts before. We step in as your CTO for a few days a month, coach the leads you already have, and help build the team you'll need next.

Sound familiar?

When a team needs leadership more than more people

None of these are signs of a bad team. They are signs of a team that has grown faster than its leadership.

  • Deadlines slip, and nobody can explain why until it is too late.
  • Your best developer was promoted to lead and is quietly drowning.
  • The founders make every technical decision because nobody else is trusted to.
  • Hiring takes months and the people who join do not stay long.
  • The business and the engineers describe the same problem in completely different ways.
  • You are raising money and investors keep asking who owns the technology.
What we do

Practical help for the people who lead

We have run engineering teams, hired for them and made our share of mistakes along the way. What we offer is experience, delivered with patience and without jargon.

  • Fractional CTO

A senior technology leader on your side for a few days a month. We own the technical strategy, sit in on board or investor meetings, manage suppliers and make the calls that need experience.

  • Interim head of engineering

When a leader leaves suddenly, we keep the team steady and delivering while you search, and we help hand over properly to whoever joins.

  • Coaching new tech leads

Regular individual sessions for engineers moving into leadership, covering planning, delegation, feedback, estimating honestly and protecting the team from constant change.

  • Team structure and hiring

Deciding which roles you actually need, writing job descriptions people want to read, running technical interviews and designing an onboarding plan that gets new people productive quickly.

  • Delivery and ways of working

A calm, predictable rhythm for getting work done, using Scrum, Kanban or something simpler. Fewer meetings, clearer priorities and releases that stop being a drama.

  • Product ownership

Coaching for product owners and managers on writing a backlog developers can work from, saying no with good reasons, and connecting each piece of work to a result the business cares about.

  • Engineering culture

Code review habits, documentation, knowledge sharing and the small things that make good engineers want to stay, from people who have seen what makes them leave.

How it works

A typical leadership engagement

We start by listening to everyone involved, not just the person who called us. That is where the real picture comes from.

  1. Listen

Short conversations with founders, leads, developers and the people who depend on them. We look at how work flows today and where it gets stuck.

  2. Agree a plan

A handful of priorities with clear measures of progress, agreed with you, so everyone knows what we are working on and why.

  3. Work alongside

Regular time with your team, in person in Cyprus or on video, to coach, decide, unblock and change habits a little at a time.

  4. Step back

The aim is always to make ourselves unnecessary. We hand responsibilities to your own people as they grow into them, and we stay in touch for as long as it is useful.

How we measure progress

Delivery is tracked with the four DORA metrics: how often you deploy, how long a change takes to reach production, how often releases cause problems and how quickly you recover. We pair them with simple team health checks and cycle time, and we agree the targets with you rather than imposing them.

Questions

Common questions

Anything else? Email info@avientiq.com and one of our engineers will reply.

What is a fractional CTO?

An experienced technology leader who works with you for a set number of days each month rather than every day. You get senior judgement on architecture, hiring, suppliers and budgets at a fraction of the cost of a permanent executive, and you can end it once you are ready to hire.

We already have a tech lead. Why would we need you?

Often you would not need us instead of them, but alongside them. Many strong engineers are promoted into leadership with no support at all. We coach them through the parts nobody teaches, such as planning, difficult conversations, saying no to the business and hiring.

Do you run Scrum?

We use whatever helps your team deliver. That might be Scrum, Kanban or a simple weekly rhythm. Our team includes a Professional Scrum Product Owner, but we care far more about results than ceremonies, and we'll happily remove meetings that aren't earning their place.

How long does an engagement usually last?

Coaching often runs for a few months. Fractional CTO work tends to last until you hire a permanent leader, and we are glad to help you find and onboard that person.
